This afternoon when I was reassured that the ITIS server was online and the links were alive again I restored all the ITIS links I could find. Writing biographies is not easy (although I did create a brief entry for Prance on the English Wikipedia) and I am leaving that for others. <p>On the french wikipedia they have a different approach:</p>

<li>If you don't know the author at all: <b>{{auteur}}</b></li>
<li>If you know the author, but have not find the article: <b>{{auteur|Liné1}}</b></li>
<li>If you know the author, and have find a disambiguation article: <b>{{auteur|[[Gray]]}}</b><br /></li>

<dd>I am trying to keep things as simple as possible. Making the link to the list of authors has two advantages&#160;: 1) no red link (I dislike red links, they make a page look unfinished) and 2) anybody following the link will end up at the list and will know at least that he is dealing with a botanical author. Also this approach helps when filling such links as anybody visiting the list of authors can try the "# Pages liées" and he is shown all the redirects. Then he can pick which he wants to create a page for. So it has much to commend it.</dd>
<dd>I just tried <b>{{auteur|Liné1}}</b> and this gives a category "Auteur incomplet ou manquant" at the bottom of the page. This looks really messy, and will hinder the user from finding the real category.</dd>
<dd>Of course, when there is a page for the author the <b>[[Augustin Pyrame de Candolle|DC.]]</b> is best on the servers. However, putting in <b><a href="../../../../articles/d/c/2E/DC._9194.html" class="mw-redirect" title="DC.">DC.</a></b> will work well if there is a redirect to <b><a href="../../../../articles/a/u/g/Augustin_Pyrame_de_Candolle_e0f6.html" title="Augustin Pyrame de Candolle">Augustin Pyrame de Candolle</a></b>. <dd>Thank you. I have no strong feelings in any direction, except that I strongly dislike redlinks and especially the "Auteur incomplet ou manquant" in front of the other categories. I don't mind not having authors at all, but on the other hand I don't mind putting in all the authors (for the moment I am using the APG II publication, but will probably switch to the new <i>ICBN</i> when it comes out, any day now). What looks easiest to me is just making the redirects, but I see you and Valérie hate those. On the other hand it would be very discouraging to me to put in the author and then still to see the ""Auteur incomplet ou manquant" among the categories.</dd>
<dd>Another issue is whether it does any good to have entries for all the authors if they are just copies of IPNI. Not only is it a lot of work to copy IPNI, but also it may be something of a copyright violation, and you would need to check them for updates of IPNI. There is a truly enormous amount of information on botanists out there, and I don't feel inclined in trying to get in it into wikipedia. I am concentrating on getting the taxonomy right, which will still be a lot of work. I am willing to include authors in taxoboxes, but I am not going beyond that.</dd>

What is debatable is the status of this group: is it a family (<i>Mimosaceae</i>) or a subfamily (<i>Mimosoideae</i>). In recent classifications (such APG) it is a subfamily (see <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Undef&amp;id=3807&amp;lvl=3&amp;p=has_linkout&amp;keep=1&amp;srchmode=1&amp;unlock" class="external text" title="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Undef&amp;id=3807&amp;lvl=3&amp;p=has_linkout&amp;keep=1&amp;srchmode=1&amp;unlock" rel="nofollow">NCBI</a>). In the Cronquist system of 1981 (classification classique) it is a family. Although dropping out of fashion the Cronquist system is still in use (especially in France and in Australia). An example of <i>Acacia</i> placed in <i>Mimosaceae</i> is this 2001 <a href="http://www.publish.csiro.au/pid/2974.htm" class="external text" title="http://www.publish.csiro.au/pid/2974.htm" rel="nofollow">Australian book</a>. Mostly, ITIS follows Cronquist, but on this matter ITIS is vague: it mentions neither <i>Mimosaceae</i> or <i>Mimosoideae</i>. I assume they made a separate decision for this important family. A source that also mentions both options is <a href="http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxecon.pl" class="external text" title="http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxecon.pl" rel="nofollow">GRIN</a> (now off-line). Though I am not sure where the strength or the weakness is. Un peu de faiblesse dans un article est souvent bienvenue, surtout quand il est long et complexe... depends.</p>
<p>J'ai déjà publié des articles en botanique, entomologie, mycologie, surtout des espèces toxiques... et même deux ou trois binômes en passant, histoire d'encombrer un peu plus la littérature&#160;:) Je pense qu'une page d'encyclopédie doit être synthétique, compacte et néanmoins agréable à lire. Sounds impossible, I know, but that's the challenging part <i>de la vulgarisation scientifique</i>, don't you think so?</p>
<p>Feel free to suggest which part you would like to develop (addend.) or modify (emend.) and I am sure something great will come out (from what I've seen of your contributions). I'll see what I can do to help.</p>

We are working on new taxoboxes templates. As soon as the description page is finished, I will give it to you.<br />
Don't worry, we do not change much, just instead of duplicating some templates for each kingdom, we simply pass the kingdom as parameter to the template. We did the same for the taxonLevel, because my {{taxobox taxon animal | [famille (biologie)|]] |... was borring. Very soon it will be something like {{taxobox taxon | animal | famille |...<br />
You can continue your phylogenetic work, we will pass a robot once we have votes for our new taxoboxs.<br />
The other good news is that our phylogenetic template will be spread to the other kingdoms. But I had to find more obvious names than 1,2,3,4 and</p>

Maibe because they rarely provide the date...</dd>
