<p>Le nom de <b>Bouqueval</b> provient peut-être de l'anthroponyme germanique Bucco et du latin <i>vallis</i>, vallée.</p>
<p>La présence humaine est fort ancienne puisque une occupation du lieu est attestée dès l'époque préhistorique, au <a href="../../../../articles/m/o/u/Moust%C3%A9rien.html" title="Moustérien">moustérien</a>, il y a 90 000 ans. L'occupation du territoire à la période gauloise est attestée par la découverte d'un habitat et d'une importante nécropole du <a href="../../../../articles/i/i/i/IIIe_si%C3%A8cle_78b2.html" title="IIIe siècle"><span class="romain" title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">III</span><sup class="exposant">e</sup> siècle</a>. Le nom de "Bocunval" apparaît au <a href="../../../../articles/x/i/i/XIIIe_si%C3%A8cle_b0b3.html" title="XIIIe siècle"><span class="romain" title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">XIII</span><sup class="exposant">e</sup> siècle</a>. Le fief fait partie de la châtellenie de <a href="../../../../articles/m/o/n/Montmorency_%28Val-d%27Oise%29_8ab8.html" title="Montmorency (Val-d'Oise)">Montmorency</a>.</p>
<p>Le territoire de la commune est en partie occupé par le centre de stockage des déchets (CSD) de Bouqueval/Plessis-Gassot depuis le début des années <a href="../../../../articles/1/9/6/1960.html" title="1960">1960</a>. À l'époque, il s'agissait juste d'une unité de récupération de <a href="../../../../articles/m/%C3%A2/c/M%C3%A2chefer.html" title="Mâchefer">mâchefer</a>, transformée en carrières de sablon en <a href="../../../../articles/1/9/6/1966.html" title="1966">1966</a>. C'est pour combler ces carrières que des autorisations de stockage, sur dix hectares, ont été demandées en <a href="../../../../articles/1/9/6/1969.html" title="1969">1969</a>. En <a href="../../../../articles/1/9/7/1974.html" title="1974">1974</a>, Thiessonville disparaît avec la création de la <a href="../../../../articles/d/%C3%A9/c/D%C3%A9charge_%28d%C3%A9chet%29.html" title="Décharge (déchet)">décharge</a> et plus aucune trace ne subsiste de cet ancien hameau. Depuis, les extensions se sont succédé pour atteindre 250 hectares. Le CSD traite en moyenne 800 000 tonnes de déchets par an, soit les déchets de deux millions de personnes.</p>

<p><b>L'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste</b> a été bâtie au <a href="../../../../articles/x/v/i/XVIe_si%C3%A8cle_d8b7.html" title="XVIe siècle"><span class="romain" title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">XVI</span><sup class="exposant">e</sup> siècle</a> , mais les voûtes du chœur datent de <a href="../../../../articles/1/8/7/1878.html" title="1878">1878</a>. À l'intérieur, remarquer une dalle funéraire à double effigie du <a href="../../../../articles/x/v/i/XVIe_si%C3%A8cle_d8b7.html" title="XVIe siècle"><span class="romain" title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">XVI</span><sup class="exposant">e</sup> siècle</a>, un bénitier du <a href="../../../../articles/x/v/i/XVIIe_si%C3%A8cle_53e7.html" title="XVIIe siècle"><span class="romain" title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">XVII</span><sup class="exposant">e</sup> siècle</a> en pierre composé d'une vasque ornée d'un décor de médaillons et de cuirs à enroulement.</p>
<p>Le cimetière renferme la tombe de Jean-Joseph Sue, membre de l'Académie de médecine (<a href="../../../../articles/1/8/3/1830.html" title="1830">1830</a>) et père du romancier <a href="../../../../articles/e/u/g/Eug%C3%A8ne_Sue_4ab8.html" title="Eugène Sue">Eugène Sue</a>. Il avait acheté sous l'Empire le château de Bouqueval dont il avait fait sa maison de campagne.</p>
<p>Une importante <b>station EDF</b> est en partie située sur la commune.</p>
