<p><a href="../../../../../en/articles/g/e/o/George_Thomas_Paget_35fd.html" class="extiw" title="en:George_Thomas_Paget">George Thomas Paget</a> est né en 1899 au Pays de <a href="../../../../articles/g/a/l/Galles_du_Sud_ecd1.html" title="Galles du Sud">Galles du Sud</a>. C'est le deuxième fils de George et Rose Paget, résidents à Margam. Ses parents sont nés et ont vécu à Midsomer Norton, dans le comté de <a href="../../../../articles/s/o/m/Somerset.html" title="Somerset">Somerset</a> (Angleterre) puis ils ont déménagé en Galles du Sud probablement en 1895 pour travailler dans l'industrie des mines de charbon, en plein développement.</p>
<p>En 1909 George habite à Bryn, près de Maesteg, dans le comté de <a href="../../../../articles/g/l/a/Glamorgan.html" title="Glamorgan">Glamorgan</a> au Pays de Galles du Sud et en 1913, à l'âgé de 14 ans, il devient mineur. La <a href="../../../../articles/p/r/e/Premi%C3%A8re_Guerre_Mondiale_ab41.html" class="mw-redirect" title="Première Guerre Mondiale">Première Guerre Mondiale</a> éclatant en 1914, George est emporté par la grande vague de patriotisme et s'engage dans l'armée britannique. Il s'engage dans le 18<sup class="exposant">e</sup> bataillon (2<sup class="exposant">e</sup> Glamorgan), mais la date exacte de son engagement n'est pas connue avec certitude. L'unité est créée à <a href="../../../../articles/c/a/r/Cardiff.html" title="Cardiff">Cardiff</a> sous l'appellation <i>bataillon de nains</i> et est transférée à Porthcawl au mois de janvier 1915.</p>
<p>Les <i>bataillons de nains</i> portaient ce nom parce que les hommes avaient la possibilité de s'y engager sans satisfaire aux conditions de taille. Mais qui avaient une forte volonté de servir leur patrie. George a probablement triché sur son âge en se faisant passer pour un adulte de petite taille.</p>
<p>La formation du 18<sup class="exposant">e</sup> bataillon a continué pendant tout l'été de 1915 à Prees Heath, Shropshire, Angleterre et ensuite, au mois de septembre 1915, le bataillon est transféré à Aldershot dans le <a href="../../../../articles/h/a/m/Hampshire_%28Angleterre%29_6de0.html" class="mw-redirect" title="Hampshire (Angleterre)">Hampshire</a> en Angleterre. Entre le 1 et 9 juin, 1916 le bataillon débarque en France. George a 17 ans.</p>
<p>Faisant partie de la 40e division de l'armée britannique, son bataillon est déployé sur le front de l'Ouest et, entre juin et octobre 1916, sur le front près de Loos.</p>
<p>On ne sait pas exactement où George a combattu mais, dans le livre sur le <i>War Memorial</i> de Maesteg, il est a indiqué que "le soldat George Thomas Paget, matricule 37915 du 18e bataillon du régiment gallois, est mort de ses blessures le 19 juillet 1916 et est enterré dans la tombe n°2 du cimetière du <a href="../../../../articles/c/o/m/Commonwealth.html" title="Commonwealth">Commonwealth</a> de Billy-Montigny dans le Pas-de-Calais, France. On ne sait pas comment et quand George fut capturé et blessé.</p>
<p>Lors de sa mort, Billy-Montigny se trouvait bien en arrière du front allemand. Des sources françaises ont fait savoir que trois soldats du Commonwealth qui sont enterrés dans le cimetière communautaire, sont morts pendant la <a href="../../../../articles/p/r/e/Premi%C3%A8re_Guerre_mondiale_7dfc.html" title="Première Guerre mondiale">Première Guerre mondiale</a>. Deux sont morts en captivité ; l'un d'eux était George.</p>
